We arrived on the island of Kauai around 5 o’clock in the afternoon where we were met by Rotary members who took us to a very nice seaside restaurant called Dukes. (Named after a former world champion surfer). We had a very enjoyable meal after which we were taken home to our host families.

We spent the first part of the day at the beach (nice with some R & R) and it was truly amazing. In the afternoon we met up with the local Rotary club at the bowling alley for some fun. It wasn’t pretty but Stephan managed to win
. The evening was spent with the host families.

Al Ficker who is a past governor of district 5000 had been so kind to rent a van so that we could go for an all day drive around the island to see the amazing sights. This included a special guided tour of the Na’Aina Kai Botanical Garden which is a beautiful place that has almost all types of plants found on the Hawaiian islands. We also saw both dry and wet caves/lava tubes. The day included an amazing hike on a stone path up the cliff side at the Ha Ena State park on the north shore. Before ending the day with an enjoyable dinner at the home of one of our hosts we made a stop a the Kilauea lighthouse.

We started off the day by attending a breakfast meeting at the Kalepa Sunrise Rotary club. We gave our presentation and had a great time talking to the members before they had to go to work. The program for the rest of the day was a tour of the southern part of Kauai including overlooking the Waimea Canyon which is Hawaii’s version of the Grand Canyon. Spectacular views. In the evening the West Kauai and Poipu Rotary clubs arranged a potluck right next to the beach, which of course was a great setting.
