After our flight from Hawaii to Maui where we were treated to clear skies and beautiful views from the plane we were picked up at the airport by Sylvia and Mary who had taken us around Maui during our visit. They took us to the Wailea Beach Marriot – Resort and Spa, where the District conference was going to be held. We checked in to our rooms and took the opportunity to spend the the afternoon at the pool.

In the evening we attended a welcome reception for everyone who had gathered from all the islands. There was a live band, star gazing with guide and pupu’s. (hours deuvres/snack bites).

After breakfast we walked aroung the beautiful beachfront resort and enjoyed that the only thing we had to do was prepare our presentation (we had to make it a bit shorter) and hand it over to the IT guys.

The conference however started in the morning and we also took the opportunity to sit in on some of the sessions which included presentations of rotary activities throughout the year and outside speakers. We did our presentation at 2:00 pm and judging from the applause and responses it was a success and everyone really liked it. The big event was in the evening where the governor had chosen the award ceremony as the format. It was really fun for all the attending clubs to see the categories, nominees and celebrate the winners in a festive atmosphere.

Afterwards there was live music which ended just before midnight and for the ones who were still ready for some informal partying they were invited to the governors suite. It was really fun just to hang out with the members in a fun atmosphere.

We watched the Hawaii GSE team do their presentation on their visit to Denmark in the fall. It was nice to have them there at the conference to exchange experiences, war stories and just to hang out. In the late afternoon everyone met up for a Luau which in short is kind of a Hawaiian barbecue. Here the governor gave his thank you speech and there was also an award ceremony recognizing the work that some of the people in District 5000 had done throughout the last year. The new district governor was presented – Ayman el-Dakhakni – and gave his thought about the future. We must say that it was a great experience to meet both the governor and governor elect several times during our roundtrip. They are great people and good fun. Of course the night ended in the governors suite once again with a great party. As Danes this made us feel at home

Before leaving Hawaii we had 2 full days in Honolulu on Oahu where our trip began and it was nice just to be able to relax and enjoy some free time without a schedule. A great finish to a great trip.
Henrik, Stephan and Mikkel went to New York for a few days on the way back to Denmark. Sabrina flew directly home and Louise went to Chicago for a workrelated conference.
